Akron man released from hospital after being rescued from burning car in Hartville

LAKE TWP.: An Akron man, 63, rescued this week from his burning vehicle has been released from a Canton hospital.

Uniontown Police Capt. David Brown and Sgt. Michael Batchik dragged the unconscious man from his sport utility vehicle, which moments earlier had entered a side parking lot outside the Hartville MarketPlace on Edison Street Northwest.

The SUV became wedged against a second vehicle and ignited.

The second vehicle and a third car also were damaged by the fire.

After talking with family members, Brown said police are investigating the possibility that the man’s medical condition played a role in the incident, which occurred about noon Monday.

When Batchik and Brown arrived, clouds of smoke and dry chemical spray used to try to extinguish the fire made it impossible to see if anyone was inside the vehicle.

The officers broke out windows, and Batchik, who searched by touch because the smoke made it impossible to see, found the man slumped against the back of the driver’s seat. Brown pulled him to safety.

A police report indicated that Hartville paramedics transported the man to Mercy Medical Center in Canton.

Armed Kenmore High School student arrested after being subdued by officer

A 15-year-old Kenmore High School student armed with a loaded semi-automatic pistol struggled with a police officer inside the school Monday morning before being subdued and arrested.

The school was locked down for about an hour, and no shots were fired. The officer who arrested the student during a struggle sustained an arm injury, police said.

The 15-year-old student, according to school officials, had been serving an in-school suspension for smoking when he was again disciplined for erratic behavior early Monday morning. He left the building without being dismissed, Akron school’s spokesman Mark Williamson said.

“Roughly 90 minutes after running from the school, the 15-year-old returned and was admitted access to the building where he would presumably face a conversation about what had occurred earlier,” Williamson wrote in an email Monday afternoon. “But, when approached by APS personnel, the student ran from the building again, then re-entered immediately.”

At that point, building staff and a police officer assigned to the school tried to apprehend the student at about 11:30 a.m.

Police Lt. Rick Edwards said the student was spotted in the main hallway near the cafeteria. The assistant principal and officer Kevin Cooper saw the boy and tried to take him into custody. A second student, 16, tried to interfere with the arrest, police said.

During the struggle inside the school hallway, the officer could feel a gun inside the student’s clothing, Edwards said. It was then that Cooper worked to take the boy outside near the main entrance. Cooper eventually restrained the boy and secured the loaded .45-caliber pistol.

Police suspect the teen, whose name is not being published because he is initially being charged as a juvenile, planned to threaten a teacher and an administrator.

“It could have been a lot worse than what it was,” Edwards said.

Edwards said the gun was reported stolen. It is not yet clear, he said, how the boy obtained the weapon.

The teen is charged with criminal trespassing, carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest. He was being held in the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

The 16-year-old boy was charged with obstructing police.

Cooper, a 12-year veteran assigned to the school as its resource officer, suffered an injury to his arm.

The school was placed on lockdown for about an hour until the incident ended about 12:30 p.m.

This is the second gun-related incident in a week involving an Akron school student. Last week, a 16-year-old North High School student was shot at a bus stop during a dispute with an 18-year-old man. The student survived several gunshot wounds.

Monday’s incident also was not the first time this year a student barred from Kenmore got inside the school.

A brawl at Kenmore High School, leading to dozens of arrests, occurred in April when a Buchtel student entered the building with help from a Kenmore student inside. The school district has since installed panic alarms in main offices and posted entry instructions outside each school’s primary entrance.

As was the case in April, the student who gained entry Monday had been transferred from other high schools after getting into trouble.

Akron Public Schools issued an all-call to parents concerning Monday’s incident and sent letters home with students. A contract agreement with teachers requires students who may pose a threat to be transferred to another school.

“He ended up at Kenmore after being at two or three other schools,” Williamson said. “Sometimes these kids get moved around and the problem follows.”

No injuries were reported Monday.

“We thank the staff at Kenmore for following security protocol that kept this armed student from entering the building,” stated the letter sent home to parents. “And, as always, our thanks to the Akron Police Department for all they do for us every day. We work closely with law enforcement on the procedures and plans to maintain safety in our schools for students and staff.”

Akron man turns himself in after victim of alleged fight dies in hospital

$

A suspect in a murder case turned himself into police after the victim of an alleged fight passed away at Akron General Medical Center following months of being in a coma.

Akron resident Kenneth B. Jackson, Jr., 30, of Madison Avenue has been charged with felonious assault and murder following an alleged incident in July that left Charles Murry, 40, also of Madison Avenue, in a “permanent, vegetative state.” He died in September.

Jackson is scheduled to be arraigned at 10 a.m. Friday in Akron Municipal Court.

Police said Murray’s family notified authorities two days after the alleged incident in July.

Authorities say detectives received conflicting statements from eye witnesses indicating that Jackson could have suffered his injuries in a fall.

“From our detectives’ standpoint, they had to determine what really happened,” said Akron police spokesman Rick Edwards.

Edwards said an investigation and an autopsy report led police to charge Jackson with striking Murry “in the face with an open hand.”

A police report said Murry was knocked to the ground and suffered a severe brain injury that led to a coma.

Bernice Murry said police dismissed a version of the events that had her brother falling off the porch of a Madison Avenue home after drinking too much.

“He wouldn’t get drunk to the point that he’s cracking something or something major is going on,” she said.

She said her brother had been bullied in the days leading up to assault.

“My brother did not deserve this,” she said. “He was sitting on [a] porch like he [did] every day.”

Bernice Murry said the family is upset that no one immediately called for help for her injured brother.

“To make it plain and simple, my brother was gone long before the paramedics got there,” she said. “My brother was a fighter. He was so funny. He was a happy person.”
