Residents hold ‘Don’t Shoot Rally’ in West Akron; traffic diverted

The group of African-Americans chanted. They waved Pan-African flags and carried signs. They formed a chain across a busy intersection, blocking traffic.

No, this wasn’t Ferguson, Mo. It was Akron, Ohio.

The two-hour protest, which carried the same message of frustration with the justice system as events held across the country this week, ended peacefully Wednesday night, with about 50 participants returning to their cars and the police reopening the intersection at Copley Road and South Hawkins Avenue.

The Rev. Roderick Pounds, who organized the event, is hoping the momentum started with the “Don’t Shoot Rally” will continue to build, with a meeting scheduled for Friday evening at his church and plans developing for a protest in front of Akron City Hall or the Akron Police Department on Monday. The pastor said they want to express their concern over recent police-involved incidents in Ferguson and closer to home in Akron and Cleveland.

“I’m tired of it!” Pounds shouted through a bullhorn during the protest. “We’ve got to make a stand!”

Pounds, who is pastor of Second Baptist Church in Akron, started the process with a solo protest at the Copley/Hawkins intersection Tuesday evening. Members of Stop the Violence who were meeting at the same time heard about his effort and stopped their meeting early to join him. They helped Pounds to drum up more support for a follow-up protest that began about 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The protesters, both adults and children, initially gathered at 5 p.m. on one corner of the Copley/Hawkins intersection, carrying signs with messages like “Stop Shooting. Stop Killing the Innocent,” and yelling the familiar chant, “Don’t Shoot! Hands up!” Many passing drivers honked their horns in support.

“They are killing unarmed black men,” said Takita Rankin of Akron, who held a sign that said “I am Mike Brown,” referring to the 18-year-old man shot by a police officer in Ferguson. “It’s time to stop. We are trying to do it in a peaceful way. We don’t want this to turn into a Ferguson.”

After a larger crowd gathered, Pounds encouraged them to form a chain and cross Copley Road, blocking traffic when the light changed. Police, who were watching the protest from the roof of the Walgreens at the intersection and already had numerous cruisers in the area, blocked off the intersection going in each direction, detouring traffic.

The protesters then stretched out on the four sides of the intersection, with Pounds in the middle.

“It is our street!” Pounds bellowed, prompting a new chant of “Whose street?” with the answer, “Our street!”

Pounds had promised the protest would be peaceful and sprinkled in reminders with the chants and rally cries. He asked the protesters not to go into the stores at the intersections, to pick up their trash before they left and, in the end, to go straight to their cars.

Darrita Davis, president of Stop the Violence, said she wasn’t expecting the intersection blocking, and was pleased that the protest remained peaceful.

“This is a serious matter,” she said. “We all should be concerned.”

Several residents who were frequenting the stores and restaurants at the intersection stopped to watch the protesters. Among them was Louis Barnes, who had just gone to the Save A Lot for bread and milk.

“I didn’t think Akron had the guts to do it,” said Barnes, who is from Washington, D.C., and now lives in Akron.

Barnes didn’t join in, though. He said he did his protesting in the ’60s when he traveled to Mississippi.

“At least they’re doing something,” he said.

At one point, Pounds said the protest would continue until 8:30 p.m., but he ended it about 7 p.m., with people having been out in the cold for two hours at that point — and several complaining of being chilled or tired.

Before the protesters left, though, Pounds invited them to a community meeting at 5 p.m. Friday at Second Baptist Church, 690 S. Main St. Davis said a meeting also will be held prior to this at 3 p.m. in the Summa Health Systems New Season Clinic, 1493 S. Hawkins Ave.

Pounds said he will firm up plans for a protest on South High Street on Monday. He said he’d love to see a huge crowd shut down that street as well.

“We’ll see if they give the same barriers they did in the hood,” he told the protesters.

“I’m going!” pledged a young black man, as he joined Pounds in the middle of Copley Road.

“We’re gonna keep hope alive!” Pounds promised.

Fraction of Ohio schools sign up for free hotline to help pre-empt shootings

$

Only a fraction of Ohio schools have registered for a free tool that would allow tipsters to help keep schools safe from gun violence.

The Ohio Department of Education last week launched the Safer OHtip program, a hotline that accepts calls or texts from anyone with concerns that a student, who might be exhibiting erratic behavior or has been bullied, may be capable of committing violence.

Calls or texts sent to 844-SaferOH (844-723-3764) are filtered by analysts at Ohio Homeland Security’s Threat Assessment and Prevention (TAP) Unit. The state agency, at no charge to the school, assesses the threat and passes along any pressing information to local law enforcement.

Though all schools benefit from the program, those that register ensure that Homeland Security has the appropriate contact information for local police and fire departments. Also, promotional posters and pamphlets may be requested from the state.

So far, 180 schools, or a fraction of Ohio’s thousands of private and public schools, have registered at safer
schools.ohio.gov for the free service.

Nearly a third of these schools signed up last Monday when the state announced the program.

By Friday, daily registrations in the program dwindled to eight.

“The safety of our boys and girls remains the top priority of our schools,” State Superintendent Richard Ross said in a release announcing the program. “The SaferOH tip line provides another resource for schools and school districts in their continuing efforts to provide a safe and secure educational environment.”

Local schools that have signed up include five school districts (Coventry, Jackson, James A. Garfield, Kent and Perry), a charter school (Life Skills High School of North Akron), Carlin Elementary School in Ravenna and four private schools (RiverTree Christian & Childcare in Massillon, St. Patrick Elementary in Kent, St. Augustine in Barberton and Spring Garden Waldorf in Copley).
