A sixth-grade girl was with her family recovering at Akron Children’s Hospital on Wednesday after a sexual assault that occurred near her Akron school.

An Akron Public Schools official said the girl, who arrived early at Innes Community Learning Center, was taken by an unidentified man before the school opened at 7:20 a.m. He carried her to a dugout in a baseball field in adjacent Prentiss Park.

“The suspect then sexually assaulted the victim,” Akron police reported.

Authorities said the girl was told to close her eyes as the suspect fled.

The girl, 12, called 911 following the incident and waited at the school with another student until police and emergency medical staff arrived. She then was transported to Children’s.

The extent and nature of the assault are uncertain as police investigate the matter.

“Her condition is good at this point,” Akron police spokesman Lt. Rick Edwards said. “She is with her family.”

The girl described her assailant as a light-skinned black or biracial man with a stocky build. He was wearing dark blue pants, a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, a bright orange vest, gloves and a ski mask. The suspect is presumed to be 25 to 30 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs between 200 and 220 pounds.

School buildings remained open beyond regularly scheduled hours Wednesday so that working parents could bring students safely home.

Additional precautions have been taken, APS spokesman Mark Williamson said.

“We have increased police patrols and presence around Innes CLC and neighboring schools in the Kenmore cluster and will continue to do so,” he said.

Williamson advised parents not to leave students — most of whom walk to school alone or with friends in Akron — unattended on school grounds before staff arrive and open the doors for breakfast.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Akron schools at 330-761-2734 or Akron police detectives at 330-375-2490.

Officials said Monday that emails from the sender “EZPass Info” are likely attempts to steal personal information from some of the 150,000 customers who use the automated E-ZPass system to automatically pay tolls on the northern Ohio thoroughfare.

The email says the customer owes money and asks the receiver to click a link to download an invoice.

The same e-mail scam also has been reported in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.

Officials say the customers with questions about the validity of a message from E-ZPass should call the Turnpike’s customer service center at 440-234-2081, extension 1075.
