FRANLIN TWP. — A Cleveland man and a Columbus woman were shot early this morning as law enforcement tried to quell a large party in Portage County, authorities said.
The man - Jayquon Devione Tillman, 18 — was pronounced dead at University Hospitals Portage Medical Center at 12:43 a.m., the Portage County Sheriff’s office said in a release. Kalin Cheyenne Lee, 20, was treated and released from Summa Health’s Akron City Hospital, the release said.
The party happened about four miles from Kent State University on the last day of most spring semester classes. Finals begin Monday.
It’s unclear if the celebration had anything to do with the end of the school year.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were dispatched to quell a large party at a multi-family residence on state Route 43 in Franklin Township about 11:30 p.m. Friday. While deputies were taking to people who live at the home, they heard a gunshot inside the house.
People at the party started to run from the house and deputies discovered that Tillman and Lee had been shot.
Several local law enforcement agencies helped deputies control the crowd and secure the homicide scene. Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to process potential evidence in the case.
Portage County Sheriff David W. Doak asks that anyone with information connecting to the case reach out to the sheriff’s office at 330-296-5100.
