Akron police are hoping the public can help them figure out what led to gunfire Wednesday afternoon in West Akron.

Here’s what police said they know: Officers heard gunfire near Bacon Avenue and Peckham Street about 4 p.m. As they drove toward the sound, they saw a black, GMC Yukon run a stop sign at Bacon Avenue and Copley Road and drive on recklessly.

When officers stopped the SUV, the 19 year-old driver told them he had just been ambushed. People driving a blue, Dodge Magnum with tinted windows and a tan, Chevy 1500 conversion van tried to pin in his Yukon and at least one person started shooting at him.

The Yukon driver said he swerved around the two vehicles and hit a parked car making his escape.

Police said bullets struck the Yukon’s driver-side door and rear window. The driver was not injured.

Police, who have no description of the shooters, ask anyone with information about what happened to call detectives 330-375-2490 .
