Carfentanil discovered in Cuyahoga County this week likely hasn’t made its way south Greater Akron, at least not yet.
The number of Summit County residents who turned up at hospital emergency rooms between July 21 and July 27 remained steady at 36, according to a weekly report put out by Summit County Public Health.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s office said it, too, has seen no significant spike in overdose deaths like it did when carfentanil — an elephant tranquilizer 10,000 times more powerful than morphine — first surfaced in the area in July 2016. Yet drug users continue to overdose and die in the county, with two suspected cases coming into the morgue on both Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
Overall, more Summit County men than women continued to come into hospitals after overdosing.
But this week’s numbers showed the average age was older than in recent weeks, with those ages 35-49 making up nearly 39 percent of cases.
