Seven vehicles parked in six different Summit Metro Parks areas had their windows smashed, and purses were taken Thursday.

At least one incident happened early in the morning, before 8 a.m.

“Don’t make it easy on opportunists,” spokesperson Nathan Eppink said. “Use the same precautions in our parking lots that you would in any other public parking area.”

The park district’s ranger department suggests keeping loose change and valuables — purses, wallets, even sunglasses — out of sight, or leaving non-essentials at home. Using a blanket or jacket to cover valuables may not be enough to discourage theft.

Never leave your keys with the vehicle, such as in the wheel well or behind a tire.

If you see suspicious activity, including people loitering near parking lots or looking in vehicle windows, please contact the park district immediately.

The administrative offices can be reached at 330-867-5511 weekdays during business hours, and rangers can be reached at 330-475-0029 after hours, weekends and holidays. Or call 911.
