Driver checkpoints Friday in Akron turn up impaired drivers, police say

Two driver sobriety checkpoints Friday in Akron nabbed people who shouldn’t be behind the wheel, the Summit County OVI Task Force said.

According to the task force: Nearly 500 vehicles passed through the first checkpoint, at 1590 Brittain Rd. Of those, law enforcement diverted 21 vehicles for further investigation. In all, police arrested four people for OVI, operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. They also picked up two others on outstanding arrest warrants, arrested one person for possession of narcotics and impounded two vehicles.

Only 108 vehicles Friday passed through a second checkpoint set up at 935 E. Tallmadge Ave.

Of those, law enforcement diverted 7 vehicles and arrested one person for OVI. One person was also arrested for possessing narcotics.

Officers at the checkpoints discovered eight drivers who were operating vehicles despite their driver’s licenses being under suspension, the OVI task for reported.
