An Akron man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and trafficking in fentanyl for selling the drug to a man who later died after using it, authorities said.

Maycon G. Alvarez, 30, of Brandon Avenue, was scheduled to go to trial Monday on a nine-count indictment in connection with the drug-related death of Zachary Smith, 32, of Akron, in September 2014.

Prosecutors said that investigators matched Alvarez’s DNA to a package found at the side of Smith’s body at his residence in the 500 block of Mohawk Drive. Cell phone records also showed that Smith called Alvarez shortly before he died.

Alvarez had several packages of heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana when he was arrested in February, prosecutors said.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of trafficking in heroin.

Sentencing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4 in Summit County Common Pleas Judge Lynne S. Callahan’s court.
